Home sweet home.

The big move.  It started with a lot of boxes, a big mess, a tired and sick mommy, and anxious kids. It has ended with a great house that is starting to feel like home. The move was harder on both kids than I imagined.  Aubrey really wanted to "go home" the first few nights.  Henry kept going outside and banging on the car door when he was tired, something I had never seen him do before. I think he wanted to "go home" too.  Since we closed on the house nearly a month before we moved in, we spent a lot of time going back and forth. I'm sure he was a little confused by it all.  By now, they both seem very happy with their new digs even though it's a work in progress.

We just did some basic updates before moving in. New paint, new carpet in the bedrooms and hall, removed the popcorn from the ceilings, and removed about 5 layers of wallpaper from the entry, dining room and kitchen. Voila! It is a great house. It was VERY well maintained, which makes things so much easier. The yard is gorgeous and I'm praying my brown thumb will not destroy what the previous owners worked for years to maintain. Think azaleas, and LOTS of them. The pride of the neighborhood according to some. Gulp. No pressure.  We can  walk to the elementary school, the grocery, restaurants and to some of our closet friends' houses.  It's a great place to call home. Ok, so now for the part you have been waiting for... some before and after (or almost after) photos of the house.

Some exterior photos. We didn't have to change anything, except we put our furniture on the front porch, so I don't have new photos. I love the trees.

Kitchen before. It's a completely functional, 1985 update (the house was built in 72). Not much to say other than it will get completely redone when Santa leaves us the money. Come on Santa, we've been good! But for now, we disposed of the wallpaper and curtains, and added our fridge. I considered painting the cabinets, but that's a lot of work when the countertops can't be changed for a while.

during...

After...

Um, OK. just kidding. No after photos here of the kitchen. Ask me for them in 2-5 years.

Living room before. Not a fan of the blue beams or the carpet. Beams got painted, carpet will stay for now. One day... wood floors.

During... (the seagreen/rock tile has to stay, and it's growing on me. Much better now that it doesn't clash with the blue beams.)

After? Well, close. Need to hang pictures, etc.

sunroom before
sunroom after. It's the playroom now.

Master before. Great space. Not so great blue carpet
After. Silver sage on the walls and a nice sisal-like carpet. Ahhh. Now if I can just get things put away and on the walls. Oh, and the lovely ceiling fan needs a new home. Any takers?

Dining room before in all it's pink glory.
5 layers of wallpaper later...
and some Christmas cheer...

Again. Not really finished, but oh so much better.

This my friends is a close-up of our entry-way and dining room tile. At first look was was horrified, disgusted, begging for it to be taken away. Then reality set in. It's thick tile. Costly and a HUGE mess to remove. So I'm working with it. The colors are not bad. Very cottage-like, which just so happens to be a style I prefer.

I mean really, you would have felt the same way when you saw this, right?

Then I realized what made it so bad was the blue carpet at the end of the hall, the pink dining room wallpaper and the blue beams. Now, not so bad? Please disregard the red lampshade and the bright yellow corner of a painting, they don't belong there. That would have been going from bad to, well, bad.

Ok, I think I overdid it. I'm done for tonight. More soon of the kids rooms. Everyone loves to see a good old dark wood paneled bedroom turn into a nice white room, right? Stay tuned.

I'm back.

At least I'm on my way back to blogging. It may be a slow start, but it's something. I feel like I can finally breathe a little.  Between moving, Thanksgiving, Junior League obligations, a ballet recital, designing Christmas cards, and the daily care and feeding of two munchkins, I thought I'd never get back to blogging. I'm not even going to try to catch-up on all that's happened, but I'll try to post some of the highlights in the next few days.  It's good to be back.

Don't blink or you'll miss it...

SNOW!  Happy December!

Oh, and I know I'm wayyyy behind on this blog.  Let's just say this move has been a challenge and I can't seem to find time for anything.  Kids still need to be fed, laundry still has to be done, and at some point the boxes must get unpacked.  So chronicling every detail has taken a back seat.  But who can pass up a photo of snow falling in Texas!  More house photos coming soon, I promise.

A sneak peak.

Has it really been two weeks since my last post? How did that happen?  Oh yeah, we're moving!  I think this move ranks up there with one of the most stressful, and we're only moving across town.  Something about having two kids at my feet more than doubles the work.  Two things go in a box, ten come out. Trying to pick paint colors while the paint swatches are being thrown across the room... not so easy.  Anyway, we closed on the house a little over two weeks ago, had the lovely popcorn ceilings removed and most of the house painted, and now we are waiting on some carpet to be installed. Once that happens, we can finish the move.  Brian has been taking trailer loads of stuff almost everyday since we bought the house and has pretty much filled the garage.  Now that the painters are done, we are in a holding pattern.

Here's a peak at the before and after.

Happy Birthday Sweet Aubrey!

Four? Really, how is that possible? Of course, if I think back to her birth in Japan, that does seem like a very long time ago.  So much has changed in the last four years, and so has she. Aubrey is so full of life, love, and spirit.  Never a dull moment.  I could go on and on about the last year, but I feel sure I've already blogged about the ups and downs of the threes.  So, I will focus this post on Aubrey's thoughts. Here's a glimpse into the mind of our sweet 4 year old...

Mom: What is your favorite food?
Aubrey: Cake, with chocolate (she happened to be eating the last piece of her cake at the time)
Mom: What is your favorite book?
Aubrey: Peter Pan
Mom: What is your favorite color?
Aubrey: Purple
Mom: What is your favorite song?
Aubrey: 1,2,3,4 (Her title for a song on the Crocodile Dock soundtrack)
Mom: What is your favorite toy?
Aubrey :playing with Kate and Emily (I pointed out that our neighbors aren't really toys)
Mom: What is your favorite thing about pre-school?
Aubrey: show and tell
Mom: What is your favorite T.V. show/movie?
Aubrey: Clifford (it's been a few months since she's watched Clifford)
Mom: What is your favorite game?
Aubrey: Matchbox cars
Mom: What is your favorite thing to wear?
Aubrey: A dress, a twirly dress (just so happened she had one on during the interview)
Mom: Who do you miss?
Aubrey: Grandma and Grandpa, and Samuel (Samuel is her buddy who she had just spent the morning playing with at the park)
Mom: Who is your favorite brother?
Aubrey: Samuel (I pointed out that her brother is Henry, but apparently Samuel is her "friend brother")
Mom: Who do you love?
Aubrey: Samuel. (should I be getting worried?)
Mom: What is your favorite sport to play?
Aubrey: chase, and soccer.
Mom: What was your favorite thing about being three?
Aubrey: wondering when I should be four
Mom: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Aubrey: A grown-up, or an adult.

We love you Aubrey. I could never have imagined four years ago how much better my life would be with you in it!

Halloween with Tink and Pan

We had another great Halloween night here in Austin. For the third year in a row, we celebrated with our neighbors, which was bitter sweet considering we'll be leaving the neighborhood soon. We had pizza and then prowled the neighborhood for a few treats.  Henry caught on pretty quick, but once he picked a piece of candy from a bowl, he would promptly hand it back to whoever was holding it. That was perfectly fine with me considering most halloween candy is laced with peanuts.

What a very busy, but wonderful halloween!

She can hardly contain her excitement!

A Birthday in Neverland

Aubrey decided she wanted to be TinkerBell for Halloween this year (so Henry had to be Peter Pan of course). I'm not really sure why.  I didn't even know she knew who TinkerBell was!  It just so happens that Aubrey's 4th birthday is on Monday, and since she wanted to have a TinkerBell party, we decided to have her party on halloween morning and just have a day of Tink.  Since we are in the midst of a move, we had to keep things small and opted to celebrate at a neighborhood park with her GiGi, our neighbors, and her friends from play group (who we don't get to see much of these days).  The weather was perfect and the kids had a ball.  I'm pretty sure they ran a few miles around the park. Aubrey hardly slowed down to eat cake.

Neverland

Here comes Pan and Tink
Sweet Caroline.
Peter Pan was fast as lightning.
And so were Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys.

Kate and Emily, our neighbors, with the birthday girl. She is really going to miss having them next door.
And she's off again.
Showing off some of her birthday loot. Thanks to everyone for helping her celebrate!
A special Navajo doll from her Grandad.
